White blood cells (WBCs) and red blood cells (RBCs) are two major types of cells found in the blood. Structure and Appearance

Red Blood Cells:

  • Also known as erythrocytes
  • Biconcave, disc-shaped cells without a nucleus

  • Flexible and able to squeeze through narrow capillaries

White Blood Cells:

  • Also known as leukocytes
  • Spherical cells with a nucleus
  • Colorless and transparent
  • Various types including neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils


Red Blood Cells:

  • Transport oxygen from the lungs to various tissues and organs
  • Carry carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs, where it is exhaled
  • The main role is in gas exchange, ensuring tissues are well-oxygenated

White Blood Cells:

  • Part of the immune system’s response to infection and inflammation
  • Protect the body against harmful microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi
  • Produce antibodies and attack foreign invaders


Red Blood Cells:

  • It has a lifespan of around 120 days
  • Constantly produced and replaced by the bone marrow

White Blood Cells:

  • Various lifespans depending on the type of white blood cell:
    • Neutrophils: a few days
    • Lymphocytes: from a few days to several years
    • Monocytes: a few days
    • Eosinophils: several weeks
    • Basophils: a few hours to a few days


Red Blood Cells:

  • Derived from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow
  • Erythropoiesis is the process of RBC production and is regulated by the hormone erythropoietin

White Blood Cells:

  • Also derived from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow
  • Differentiate into various types of white blood cells


Red Blood Cells:

  • Abundant in the blood, around 4-6 million per microliter
  • Higher numbers indicate good oxygen-carrying capacity

White Blood Cells:

  • Fewer in number compared to RBCs, around 4,000 to 11,000 per microliter
  • Elevated numbers can indicate infection or inflammation


Both red blood cells and white blood cells play crucial roles in maintaining our health. Red blood cells are responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body, while white blood cells function in immune responses to protect against infections.
